Are You Storing Personal Items in the self storage facility?
You may have personal items to store due to a home move, downsizing, or perhaps you’ve just decided to declutter your home or renovate.
You could be a student who doesn’t want to move your possessions all the way back home between academic years. For storage providers, student storage is a very common requirement. For any of these situations and more, if you are using our self storage facility, we’ve got you covered.

Are you storing Business Assets?
Many businesses are now opting for commercial storage units to store excess inventory, unused furniture, paperwork & more, securely stored off-premises in commercial storage facilities. Protected these assets in the event of an unexpected accident is just as important as keeping your work premises and everything inside covered from unexpected incidents.
Our business storage insurance policies will cover a wide range of assets such as stock, stationary, furniture and more for a low monthly cost.

How Do I Work Out The Value Of My Items in my storage unit?
As the customer, it is your responsibility to calculate the sum of the goods you have in your storage unit. You can do this by adding up the amount you paid for all of the goods combined or the value of items stored can be determined independently by a professional valuer. It is vitally important that you do not under estimate the value which is easily done, be as through as you can be in arriving at an insurance value for your personal StoreProtect policy.
Do I have to take out Corby Self Storage unit policy or can I use my own self storage cover?
We would always recommend using our own specialist self storage unit policy contents protection provided through our Store Protect Policy which in the event of a claim, will provide you with both the appropriate cover and dedicated support. Third party policies may not be able to provide this level of service in helping you process any claim.

We understand that your possessions are valuable to you. That’s why at Corby Self Storage we do everything we possibly can to make sure they’re safe and secure while in storage. To provide that extra peace of mind we ask that all our customers protect the value of their goods.

We offer our customers competitive cover for the duration of their stay. We do ask that anyone who chooses not to use our storage cover provides us with evidence that their belongings have the appropriate level of cover.
Not all household insurances will cover you whilst your possessions are away from your home in a self storage facility. Your household policy might state it covers “contents away from home”, but usually that does not include cover in self storage, so please check the terms of your policy.

If choosing to arrange your own self storage insurance cover, your policy must provide the same high level of cover as the Smartbox Self Storage StoreProtect Policy Your documentation, certificate, cover note and/or correspondence from your broker must be checked to ensure the following (please highlight all of these following points on your document(s) for our ease of reference):
The certificate/cover note is current. All self storage insurance certificates last for one year and have an expiry date.

What risks does StoreProtect typically cover?
The certificate/cover note/correspondence states that the cover provided matches the ‘normal perils’ covered within Corby Self Storage Removers’ and General Insurance Policy. These are: Loss, destruction or damage to your property caused by Fire, Lightning, Explosion, Earthquake, Storm, Flood, Burst Pipes, Theft accompanied by forcible or violent entry or exit, Riot, Strike, Civil Commotion, Malicious Damage, Impact by vehicles or aircraft, damage caused by dropping of a container and moth, insect or vermin damage when caused by an external source.
Such disasters are already devastating if you consider the sentimental value of many possessions stored within these units. Without insurance, the cost of replacing your belongings in the face of any of these incidents could be astronomical. Our StoreProtect gives you – and your storage provider – the peace of mind that should any natural disasters, theft, or other unforeseen circumstances occur, you’re covered.

The storage insurance certificate must state that it covers goods stored in ‘any unspecified warehouse or storage unit’ or ‘anywhere in the UK’ or the certificate must name the store you are storing at and the full postal address of the premises.

The stored goods value given on your storage inventory does not exceed the value on the certificate/cover note/correspondence.
The certificate/cover note needs to be in the name of the Customer on the Licence, or the Customer noted on the Licence, as the owner of the goods.
In addition, you will have needed to complete your self storage inventory, which should identify any valuable items you have placed in the storage facility. Please remember it is your responsibility to keep your storage insurance policy documentation valid and up to date.

How else can I protect my belongings when renting a storage unit?
While StoreProtect covers the value of your belongings should anything go wrong, there are also things you can do to reduce the likelihood of anything going wrong while your items are stored in your unit. Choosing a reputable storage company is the best way to do this.
A high-quality storage provider will have:
  • CCTV with 24 hour recorded surveillance
  • Digitally controlled gates with a record of who coming on site
  • Security Fencing and flood lighting
  • Factory fitted high security lock box plus a complimentary heavy duty padlock or indoor units with Smartphone app unique access control
  • Look for well ventilated storage units with no signs of damp or mould. Whether its large storage units or small storage units, condensation can only come from what is put into a storage unit. If you put only dry things in your container, everything will stay perfectly dry. If you put wet clothes, garden furniture or a washing machine full of water in, you may experience condensation. And remember, pack your items appropriately. Although it may sound obvious, packing your heavier items at the bottom and lighter belongings at the top, will often be forgotten in the rush of packing and loading. By keeping heavier and sturdier items at the bottom, you’ll not only be protecting the smaller, more delicate items, but also creating a safer stacking structure too.
